  • In Sudan the baobab tree or 'tree of life' provides fruit with three times the vitamin C of an orange and more calcium than spinach. The bark can be woven into clothing or rope. The tree became endangered when conflict prevented natural regeneration. Practical Action partnered with El Fashir nursery to raise 200,000 seedlings to be planted in villages in North Darfur.   • Significant migration into the Amazon rainforest in Peru has seen large tracts of forest cut down, resulting in soil erosion and land degradation. Practical Action is working with communities to improve agricultural techniques, including avoiding chemicals and using intercropping to prevent pests. Communities have planted coffee and other local fruit trees to reduce erosion and earn a living. Practical Action/Ana Castaneda
